Green Tea Benefits
What is green tea?
Green Tea is a type of tea (Canellia sinensis) that is considered one of the healthiest drinks on the planet and one of the best nootropics on the market thanks to its high content of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).
What is EGCG?
It is a molecule that we can find in various foods of plant origin such as strawberries, apples, avocados, pears, cherries, kiwis, blackberries and pistachios, but they are found in higher concentrations in green tea leaves.
What is it for?
Hundreds of studies have been done on green tea, including concluding that the impacts are greatest when combined with caffeine and L-Theanine , both ingredients found naturally in green tea and found in POWER .
Scientific studies show that:
- Influence on psychopathological symptoms, reducing anxiety .
- Increases cognition, benefiting memory and attention .
- Neuronal activity in the brain is increased .
- It is effective in reducing fat mass and body weight.
- It has a positive impact on preventing memory impairment associated with age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.
- Improves mood by increasing alertness , increasing calm and satisfaction.
How does the ingredient work in the brain?
Green tea contains several ingredients, among which L-Theanine, the antioxidant EGCG and caffeine stand out. Caffeine blocks an inhibitory neurotransmitter called adenosine which increases the firing of neurons and the concentration of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine.
Green tea wakes you up in a more subtle, slow and prolonged way due to the synergy of caffeine with the presence of the amino acid L-Theanine, which can cross the blood-brain barrier and increase the activity of the GABA neurotransmitter (gamma-aminobutyric acid) which has antioxidant effects.
Many people claim to have a smoother and more stable energy compared to the energy of coffee.
Naturally, the ingredient is not fully absorbed by the body, however, when combined with piperine , the ingredient is free to pass through the fatty acids in the stomach to be absorbed in the intestines.
That is why drinking green tea will not have the same brain benefits as taking a supplement that has green tea extract and piperine in its formulation.
Why do we need it?
We live in a fast-paced world and we are constantly involved in stressful situations. Stress damages our cells and increases cortisol levels in the blood.
We get old and over the years our brain begins to transform its chemistry and the energy of our metabolism is reduced.
Green tea helps reduce the formation of free radicals, which protects cells and molecules from damage.
How does it help you?
In addition to providing you with a smooth steady energy, green tea helps you increase your intelligence and brain health. Attention levels are increased and sleep quality increases, brain health improves and inflammation decreases. Helps produce new neurons and connections between neurons. Improves brain health, memory, mood, and cognitive functions. It feels?
As always, the sensations and experiences are personal and subjective, however, the testimonials mention that, unlike coffee, green tea provides a softer and more prolonged type of energy, instead of sudden and aggressive.
What do scientific studies say?
In addition to giving benefits to the brain, a group of scientists from the University of Guadalajara in Mexico verified in 2017 than ingesting EGCG with caffeine for 12 weeks “it is evident that interventions of 12 weeks or more show a greater tendency towards a decrease in weight and body fat.
A 2011 Korean study , conducted against placebos and with control groups, showed that green tea in combination with L-Theanine significantly improved memory in adults with some cognitive impairment.
Their scores on memory and recognition tests also improved compared to the group that received a placebo.
Another study that was also carried out in comparison with placebos, carried out with healthy adults, analyzed the brain through nuclear magnetic resonance and found a significant increase in the activity of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in those who ingested green tea. Which is an area of the brain whose responsible functions include language, memory, attention and temporal planning.
The health benefits associated with green tea consumption have also been substantiated in animal studies of chemo-prevention of cancer, hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and other aging-related disorders.
